Purpose of the Internship

The AFLA International Justice Intern role is designed to provide aspiring legal professionals with deep exposure to the workings of international tribunals and courts, specifically the International Criminal Court (ICC). As an intern, you will not just be observing; you will be contributing meaningfully to AFLA’s mission of strengthening human rights protections and promoting justice across the African continent and beyond. You will work under the direct mentorship of experienced practitioners, developing practical legal skills that are essential for a career in international law.

Key Responsibilities

The AFLA International Justice Intern will engage in a wide variety of substantive and operational tasks:

• Legal Research and Documentation: Conduct thorough research on emerging human rights issues and international criminal law. The AFLA International Justice Intern will monitor ICC proceedings, summarizing key decisions, hearings, and filings to produce briefing notes for the legal team.
• Advocacy and Capacity-Building: Assist in organizing AFLA’s workshops, seminars, and online training programs for regional stakeholders. You will help develop materials for advocacy campaigns and engage with policy actors to promote international justice standards.
• Multimedia and Communications: Support the production of the AFLA podcast series by assisting with content planning, scripting, and editing. The AFLA International Justice Intern will also manage social media channels to raise public awareness of ongoing legal proceedings.
• Administrative Support: Provide day-to-day operational assistance, including document management and meeting coordination, ensuring the smooth functioning of AFLA’s strategic initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful as an AFLA International Justice Intern, candidates must demonstrate both academic excellence and a proactive mindset:

• Education: Must hold an advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Law, International Law, Human Rights, or a closely related field.
• Legal Knowledge: A demonstrated understanding of international criminal law frameworks and the operations of international courts.
• Language Skills: Fluency in English is required; a working knowledge of French is considered a significant asset for regional engagement.
• Competencies: Excellent writing and analytical skills are paramount. We value candidates who are detail-oriented, have strong interpersonal skills, and—importantly—possess a sense of humor to thrive in a demanding, dynamic professional environment.
• Technical Skills: Familiarity with digital tools for research and an interest in multimedia content creation, such as podcasting and social media curation.
