Role Purpose

As AI Research Specialist you will lead design and implementation of AI and data science research under UNOPS programmes. You will drive the applied science agenda, develop machine learning models, coordinate research collaborations, and translate technical findings into actionable insights. Your work helps shape strategic decisions, supports global development initiatives, and delivers measurable results.

What You’ll Do

Lead the development and execution of UNOPS applied science roadmap for AI including AI mapping, optimization, data science research, connectivity analysis, and impact assessment.

Design and run machine learning and AI experiments related to connectivity mapping, resource allocation, social impact analytics, or other relevant development or humanitarian contexts.

Provide technical guidance to UNOPS teams and partners on research methodology, data science practices, and AI model development.

Build and maintain partnerships with academic institutions, research labs, private sector technology firms, and civil society organisations to collaborate on AI and data projects.

Translate research outcomes into policy briefs, decision making tools, operational plans, or technical guidance appropriate for stakeholders and non technical audiences.

Document findings, prepare research reports, dashboards or internal tools that inform programme implementation and strategic planning.

Participate in global discussions, forums or events on AI, data science, and development to represent UNOPS and share knowledge.

Who You Are / Requirements

You hold an advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or a related discipline or a first degree plus equivalent relevant experience.

You have strong experience in AI, machine learning, data analysis and research methodology, preferably with a track record of projects in development, social impact, connectivity, or humanitarian contexts.

Excellent programming and data skills (Python, R, statistical modeling, data cleaning, model evaluation) and familiarity with AI workflows, data pipelines, and evaluation metrics.

Strong analytical thinking with ability to interpret complex data and generate actionable insights.

Demonstrated ability to communicate research findings clearly to technical and non technical audiences, including writing reports or briefs, and presenting results.

Excellent collaboration and partnership building skills; capable of working with diverse stakeholders from academia, government, private sector, and civil society.
