About the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe

The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) is the national regulatory authority responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices available in Zimbabwe meet the required standards of quality, safety and efficacy. Through scientific evaluation, laboratory testing and regulatory oversight, MCAZ plays a vital role in protecting public health and strengthening confidence in the country’s healthcare system.

The Authority is inviting applications from qualified, experienced and self-motivated professionals to fill the position of Chief Analyst (Chemistry) within its Laboratory Services Division. This is a senior technical role suited to professionals with extensive experience in pharmaceutical quality control, laboratory management and analytical chemistry.


MCAZ Chief Analyst Position overview

The MCAZ Chief Analyst will be reporting to the Head of Laboratory Services, the Chief Analyst (Chemistry) will oversee technical laboratory operations while ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality analytical services. The successful candidate will supervise laboratory staff, coordinate analytical activities, strengthen quality management systems and support the continuous improvement of laboratory operations.

The MCAZ Chief Analyst role requires a highly experienced analytical chemist capable of maintaining internationally recognised laboratory standards while supporting regulatory functions related to medicines and pharmaceutical products.


Key responsibilities

The successful MCAZ Chief Analyst candidate will supervise daily laboratory operations to ensure analytical work is completed within established timelines while maintaining high standards of quality and technical accuracy. The role involves assisting the Head of Laboratory Services with laboratory administration, operational management and financial oversight.

Responsibilities include reviewing analytical reports before release, monitoring laboratory performance, evaluating operational processes and ensuring the effective implementation of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) standards and other recognised quality requirements throughout laboratory operations.

The MCAZ Chief Analyst will also oversee staff performance management, coordinate laboratory training and competency development programmes, ensure scheduled maintenance, servicing and calibration of laboratory equipment, and lead continuous improvement initiatives through operational and process re-engineering.

The position further requires ensuring that all analytical methods are appropriately verified and validated before implementation, providing technical guidance on analytical challenges, and managing the RCORE training programme to strengthen laboratory capability and regulatory excellence.

Qualifications and experience

Applicants must possess a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Chemical Technology or an equivalent qualification. A Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences or Pharmaceutical Chemistry will be considered an added advantage.

Candidates should have a minimum of five years’ post-qualification experience in pharmaceutical Quality Control and/or Quality Assurance within a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment or a medicines regulatory authority.

Applicants should demonstrate sound knowledge of current Good Laboratory Practice (cGLP), a strong understanding of current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), and expert knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, analytical techniques and equipment management.
