UNESCO is inviting applications for the position of STEM National Consultant to support the implementation of the Fostering STEM Education in Africa and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) project in Samoa. This senior consultancy opportunity is ideal for experienced STEM education professionals who are passionate about curriculum development, education reform, gender equality, and strengthening science and mathematics education systems.
The successful consultant will work closely with the UNESCO Regional Office for the Pacific States, the Ministry of Education in Samoa, curriculum specialists, educators, and other stakeholders to enhance STEM education through curriculum development, skills assessments, and the establishment of STEM laboratories and learning hubs. The assignment will contribute to improving science and mathematics education while promoting innovative, learner-centred and gender-transformative teaching approaches.
The STEM National Consultant will lead the design and implementation of a national STEM Skills Demand Assessment to identify competency gaps and align STEM education with future workforce needs. Based on the findings, the consultant will provide technical guidance for strengthening science and mathematics curricula and develop practical guidelines for establishing and improving STEM laboratories and innovation hubs in schools and training institutions.
About STEM National Consultant role
Applicants should possess extensive experience in STEM education, curriculum development, education policy, or teacher training, with a strong understanding of gender-responsive education and international best practices. The role requires close collaboration with government institutions, curriculum developers, teachers, technical experts, and industry stakeholders to ensure that project outputs are evidence-based, practical, and aligned with Samoa’s education priorities.
Candidates must hold an advanced degree in Education, STEM, International Development, or a related discipline together with a minimum of ten years’ relevant professional experience. Previous experience supporting governments, curriculum authorities, or international development organisations in STEM education projects will be highly advantageous. Experience working in Small Island Developing States or developing countries, together with knowledge of UNESCO education frameworks, will be considered a strong advantage.

The STEM National Consultant will be responsible for producing key project deliverables, including project work plans, a national STEM Skills Demand Assessment, curriculum enhancement recommendations, STEM laboratory and hub guidelines, and a final narrative report. Qualifications and Experience

Experience in gender-transformative education, STEM laboratories, curriculum reform, government advisory work, and UNESCO or international education programmes will be highly advantageous.
