Operating as a central pillar within FPU’s holistic protection network, the incoming Free Press Unlimited Project officer will help counter the rising physical, digital, legal, and mental security risks faced by reporters worldwide. This position focuses heavily on the Latin America and Caribbean region, requiring an adaptable professional who can coordinate rapid-response security allocations. Because media emergencies do not follow standard office timetables, the role demands a resilient individual who is ready to step up and handle time-sensitive, high-stakes protection cases outside regular working hours or over weekends when a journalist’s life or liberty is on the line.


Key Responsibilities and Strategic Deliverables

The daily portfolio for the successful Free Press Unlimited Project officer balances rapid crisis response, international logistical planning, network development, and stakeholder management.

1. Rapid Response & Emergency Assistance Coordination

  • Reporters Respond Management: The Free Press Unlimited Project officer will focus on Coordinating and facilitating urgent emergency assistance mechanisms for journalists in distress, particularly those operating across high-risk corridors in Latin America and the Caribbean, through the dedicated Reporters Respond program.
  • Crisis Decision-Making: The Free Press Unlimited Project officer will focus on Reviewing time-sensitive protection applications under pressure, executing initial risk verifications, and processing rapid-response protection funds swiftly and effectively.
  • Out-of-Hours Availability: The Free Press Unlimited Project officer will focus on Maintaining a flexible operational mindset to manage unexpected media crises and coordinate urgent protection steps outside standard European office hours.

2. International Event Logistics, Governance & Gathering Management

  • Gathering Organization: The Free Press Unlimited Project officer will focus on Organizing project-related briefings, safety gatherings, coalition meetings, and advocacy visits both within the Netherlands and across international program zones.
  • Logistics Orchestration: The Free Press Unlimited Project officer will focus on Managing complex travel itineraries, secure venue bookings, visa tracking, and hospitality facilities in close coordination with the Safety Team Lead.
  • Document Control: The Free Press Unlimited Project officer will focus on Maintaining precise internal project records, case files, and tracking registries to streamline institutional reporting loops.

3. Regional Network Expansion & Stakeholder Stewardship

  • Partner Cultivation: The Free Press Unlimited Project officer will focus on Building and maintaining trusted relationships with local media defense partners, human rights organizations, and legal networks across the LAC region.
  • Network Amplification: The Free Press Unlimited Project officer will focus on Expanding the organization’s regional intelligence pipelines to stay ahead of shifting press freedom issues and emerging gender-related security risks.
