Based at the active mining operation in Bindura, this role sits within the Technical Services team.
The Mine Planning Engineer position is designed for an analytical, software-proficient engineer capable of designing safe, high-value mine layouts, converting mineral resources to ore reserves, and delivering optimized short-to-long-term development schedules for both underground and open-pit environments.
Key Responsibilities and Engineering Deliverables
The portfolio for the Mine Planning Engineer spans advanced geological data conversion, infrastructural service design, operational scheduling, and contractor evaluation.
1. Mine Design and Resource Optimization
- Value-Driven Layouts: The Mine Planning Engineer will be responsible for developing strategic mining designs and extractions that optimize deposit value and remain strictly aligned with the mine’s long-term asset master plan.
- Reserve Conversion: Processing raw geological datasets to systematically convert measured and indicated mineral resources into viable, mineable ore reserves.
- Services Infrastructure: Designing critical mine service infrastructure layouts, including power distribution placement, underground dewatering networks, and primary/secondary ventilation systems.
- Equipment Selection: Evaluating operational payloads and cycle times to optimize mine equipment selection for haulage, drilling, and loading teams.
2. Scheduling, Compliance, and Cross-Functional Integration
- Development Plans: Delivering detailed development and production plans to meet short-, medium-, and long-term scheduling metrics, while monitoring real-time compliance out in the pits or shafts.
- Interdisciplinary Synthesis: Engaging directly with Geology, Survey, Finance, and Engineering departments to deliver safe, practical, and highly economic mine designs.
- Cycle Improvements: Reviewing mine design sequencing to optimize active operations and communicating directly with front-line production crews to ensure continuous improvement of the core mining cycle.
3. Financial Management and Subordinate Leadership
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Producing accurate sectional budgets, operating expenditure frameworks, and resource consumption forecasting.
- Contractor Management: Assisting the Senior Planning Engineer in auditing third-party contractor KPIs, managing operational service contracts, and compiling weekly, monthly, and annual engineering briefs.
- Performance Control: Managing the performance of subordinate technicians, tracking milestones, and implementing targeted technical training programs.
