Core Responsibilities: Bridging Science and Policy
Interns within the Office of Strategy and Policy will be involved in a diverse array of tasks that bridge the gap between technical research and diplomatic implementation.
1. Science & Technology Monitoring:
You will assist in monitoring emerging developments in science and technology relevant to the Chemical Weapons Convention. This involves researching specific topics in detail and analyzing how new chemical or technological breakthroughs could influence international security and verification protocols.
2. Science for Diplomats:
A unique component of this track within The OPCW internship programme is participation in “Science for Diplomats” events. Interns help develop activities and materials to communicate complex scientific concepts to policymakers and diplomats, ensuring technical data is accessible to non-scientific stakeholders.
3. Support to the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB):
You will provide administrative and technical support to the OPCW Scientific Advisory Board and its various Temporary Working Groups. This includes assisting in the preparation of reports, briefing notes, and high-level presentations for international conferences.
4. Outreach and Design:
Beyond research, interns are encouraged to apply creative skills by designing graphics and layouts for internal documentation and outreach materials, enhancing the visual communication of the Office’s findings.

Eligibility and Requirements
The OPCW internship programme maintains high standards for its scientific cohorts. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Background: Currently enrolled in (and completed at least one year of) a scientific discipline degree program, a graduate school program, or have graduated from a scientific program within the last year.
- Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens of an OPCW Member State.
- Discipline: A background in chemical sciences is highly desirable, though other scientific disciplines will be considered. Candidates with non-scientific backgrounds will not be considered for this specific track.
- Skills: Strong analytical, research, and technical writing skills. Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of another official OPCW language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an advantage.
- Personal Traits: High degree of integrity, professionalism, and an interest in international diplomacy and global security.
