The 2026 AI for Impact Challenge is now accepting proposals from innovators, startups, researchers, universities, software developers, designers, innovation hubs, and multidisciplinary teams across Zimbabwe. Organised by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), the 2026 AI for Impact Challenge aims to transform the country’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy into practical, high-impact solutions that address real-world challenges.
Serving as the implementation framework for Zimbabwe’s AI Grand Challenge, the 2026 AI for Impact Challenge seeks proposals that combine technical credibility with measurable public value. Participants will receive the opportunity to refine their ideas, collaborate with experts, and position their innovations for incubation and milestone-based implementation support.
About the 2026 AI for Impact Challenge
The 2026 AI for Impact Challenge is designed to strengthen Zimbabwe’s AI ecosystem by identifying innovative solutions that can improve public services, economic development, and digital transformation. Rather than rewarding theoretical concepts, the programme encourages applicants to demonstrate clear implementation plans, defined user groups, and realistic pathways to adoption or scaling.
Selected participants will take part in a multi-week preparation process followed by a six-day residential bootcamp in Mutare, where they will receive mentorship from technical experts, coaches, and industry adjudicators.

The 2026 AI for Impact Challenge is open to both early-stage innovators with promising ideas and established teams with prototypes, datasets, or minimum viable products.
Four Innovation Tracks
Participants in the 2026 AI for Impact Challenge must align their proposals with one of four specialised tracks.
The Data Track focuses on collecting, structuring, and governing datasets that support AI development. The Design Track centres on dashboards, visualisations, and digital experiences that transform data into actionable insights.
The Development Track supports AI-powered products and prototypes addressing sectors such as agriculture, health, education, finance, tourism, accessibility, climate resilience, and public services. Meanwhile, the Deployment Track concentrates on responsible AI implementation, governance frameworks, compliance, cybersecurity, fairness testing, and institutional adoption.
Eligibility Requirements
To participate in the 2026 AI for Impact Challenge, applicants must form teams consisting of two to five Zimbabwean citizens or residents who are at least 18 years old. Proposed solutions should address a demonstrated public, regulatory, or industry need and be clearly aligned with one primary challenge track.
POTRAZ encourages multidisciplinary teams that combine expertise in technology, design, policy, law, research, and sector-specific knowledge. Strong applications should present concrete implementation plans, identify intended users, outline technical approaches, and explain expected outcomes.
Applicants should also note that previous recipients of certain POTRAZ, Universal Service Fund, or Ministry of ICT funding within the past five years may face participation restrictions, and duplicate or previously funded projects may be disqualified.
Incubation and Implementation Support
Unlike conventional competitions, the 2026 AI for Impact Challenge provides milestone-based implementation support rather than cash prizes. Following the residential challenge, 16 high-performing teams will be selected for onboarding into the POTRAZ Incubation Programme at the National Innovation Acceleration Centre.
These teams may receive technical mentorship, validation support, ecosystem connections, responsible AI guidance, and milestone-linked grant funding designed to help move promising innovations toward piloting and adoption.
Recruitment Notice
The 2026 AI for Impact Challenge is seeking demand-driven, technically sound, and impactful AI proposals that contribute to Zimbabwe’s national development priorities. Applications close on 14 July 2026, after which shortlisted teams will be announced on 21 July 2026 before participating in the residential bootcamp in Mutare. Teams should ensure their submissions include sufficient evidence, implementation logic, and alignment with the selected challenge track.
