The Wits Centre for Journalism, in partnership with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), is inviting applications for a Journalists Training Workshop focused on critical coverage of Africa-China trade, investment, and political relations.
The programme is designed for professional journalists across Anglophone West Africa who report on international affairs, economics, politics, development, and related sectors. The training aims to strengthen investigative capacity, improve analytical reporting, and deepen understanding of Africa-China engagement dynamics.

Purpose of the Journalists Training Workshop
The Journalists Training Workshop seeks to improve the quality of reporting on Africa-China relations by equipping journalists with advanced analytical tools and regional context. The focus is on trade flows, political cooperation, infrastructure investment, extractive industries, and broader geopolitical implications.
Participants will be trained to produce in-depth, evidence-based journalism that contributes to public understanding of Africa’s evolving economic and political partnerships.
The programme also supports cross-border media collaboration among journalists in West Africa.
What the Training Covers
The workshop will provide structured training on reporting methodologies and thematic analysis related to Africa-China engagement.

▪ Reporting on infrastructure, extractives, and development financing

Eligibility Criteria
The Journalists Training Workshop is open to professional journalists based in Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia.
Applicants must:
▪ Work in print, radio, television, or digital media
▪ Cover politics, business, economy, trade, development, environment, infrastructure, extractives, or international affairs
▪ Obtain official permission from their editor or media organisation
▪ Demonstrate ability to produce in-depth journalism after training
▪ Be available for the training period in September–October 2026
