Core Responsibilities: Risk & Underwriting

The Old Mutual Junior Agronomist serves as a technical bridge, ensuring that agricultural insurance products are backed by sound scientific data.

  • Risk Evaluation: Apply agronomic principles to evaluate the risk associated with specific agricultural products and portfolios.
  • Underwriting Support: Review insurance proposals and documentation to ensure compliance with established business rules and underwriting standards.
  • Liability Management: Assist in determining potential liabilities for claims by providing technical input on crop health, weather patterns, and soil conditions.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Old Mutual is looking for a “numbers-driven” scientist who can manage complexity and collaborate across departments.

  • Academic Qualification: A Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, or a closely related agricultural field is mandatory.
  • Professional Experience: A minimum of 1–2 years of relevant experience. This can be in direct agronomy, agricultural insurance, underwriting, or risk assessment within a financial services environment.
  • Technical Skills: Strong numerical aptitude, data compilation skills, and an understanding of regulatory compliance management.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent oral communication for stakeholder engagement and the ability to remain “action-oriented” in high-pressure situations.
